What Can you Do to Speed Up the Internet?

April 4th, 2009
modems
The Internet’s never going to be fast enough, but follow our tips and it’ll be faster than what is was.

Anyone who has ever used their own home computer to demonstrate the Internet to a friend who’s never seen it before knows there’s one question that occurs more than any other: Why is it so slow?

As the kind person showing your friend the delights of the online experience, it’s hard not to feel a little offended. How dare they criticize your setup and the majesty of the Internet? But, of course, there’s a lot of truth in the question. The Internet is slow. Actually, it’s good to be reminded of this, because the chances are there’s a lot that can be done to speed it up. There are three main areas to consider. Hardware, software, and the phone line.

Hardware

Lets begin with your computer. Modern web browsers require lots of system resources. Any recent computer fits the bill, but what if you have to make do with something older? Adding more ram is good, especially if you have less than 256mb. Consider adding a faster hard disk. It won’t speed up downloads from the Internet, but avoids windows slowing things down by swapping files from RAM to disk, and your browser should be able to work more quickly.

Don’t forget your modem. If you’re still using a 56k modem, then perhaps it’s time to upgrade to ISDN or ADSL. It needn’t cost the earth either. Broadband Internet is becoming so popular that many home users have already upgraded to this option. Most ISP’s will throw in a free router as part of the package. If you don’t have a network card in your computer to support the router, then perhaps it is time to upgrade that old PC.

You may be thinking that it’s OK because you’ve had a 56k modem for years. But the money you’re wasting on dial-up and slow downloads could be considerably higher than if you resorted to broadband internet. Check with your local ISP about broadband packages on special. If you are going to purchase your own router, make sure your operating system and computer will support the new router. Your local computer store will most probably offer you free advice on the best way to setup your router.

Software

If you are going to stick with 56k modems, hardly anyone is happy with their speed, a dissatisfaction which has bred a brand new genre – utilities designed to speed things up. One major subcategory is the accelerator, a program which speeds up your browser in two different ways. First, they replace the browser’s cache with their own faster, smarter version. Second, they help make the most of your available bandwidth.

Normally, when you’ve downloaded a web page, your modem is idle while you read it. Accelerator programs take advantage of this, working through the links on the page, and downloading them while you read. This is known as pre-fetching. When you click on a link, if it’s already been fetched, then you see it speedily displayed from your own hard disk instead of having to wait for it to come from the Internet.

This sounds ideal, but there are a few problems. Accelerators can be intrusive, and it’s possible for all this background activity to slow you down. It’s also hit-and-miss whether the next link you click will be to one of the pages pre-fetched by the accelerator. If it’s not, you won’t see any benefit at all.

Also, Internet purists argue that accelerators can slow down the Internet for everyone because they increase Internet traffic by fetching pages that might never be viewed. Despite big claims for them of speed increases of 10 times or more, most people are unlikely to see more than 50% improvement at best and tasks such as downloading files will be no faster at all.

Another software category tries to optimize Windows Dial-Up Networking. This is normally done through the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit). The theory behind this is complex, but basically all Internet data sent to and from your computer travels in little chunks called packets. MTU defines the maximum size of each packet and the default MTU setting isn’t suitable for modem connections – by changing it, so the theory goes, you can get a big speed increase. Is it true? Some people report improved performance, others report no change at all.

It’s important to use the right tools for the job. If you’re downloading, use a download manager to speed things up. A good download manager checks for mirror sites to see which is faster, and even switches between sites during the download to get the best performance. You can even schedule downloads for off peak hours.

Phone Line

A major bottleneck in your Internet connection is your telephone line. Standard phone technology just isn’t good enough for speedy downloads. Therefore, you should seriously consider the other possibilities, ISDN and ADSL. Logging on is very quick compared to the tedious wait during dial-up. Rental could be high, but check with a few ISP’s and you may find it’s much cheaper than you imagined. If you need improved speed, the costs may be worth it. Plus, you will have a 24 hours always-on connection.

The faster your modem goes, the more pleasant your Internet experience will be.

Ethernet Modem. 5 Reasons to Get Rid of Hardware

February 12th, 2009
modems
Ethernet modem is an up-to-date virtualization technology meant to ease every-day tasks people have to face. In this article we will give a general overview of what ethernet modem is and why hardware is no more needed.

Ethernet Modem allows any modem communications applications to interact via LAN or the Internet. Application "dials" remote IP address instead of making a dial-direct call using hardware modem. Moreover, it looks as if the application worked with hardware modem. But in fact, a hardware modem is not used. Usually hardware modems are used to connect communications applications over standard phone lines. Here comes the pain and our 10 reasons to get rid of hardware:

Phone line and modem hardware are required. You need a phone line and a modem beside each computer from which you want to establish modem connection. Phone call charges. You have to pay for each phone call. It’s even worse if you make international phone calls. Busy phone line. You cannot use your phone line for other purposes while using modem connection. Unreliability of phone connection. Besides phone connections are not reliable, they are low-speed. Too stressful thus complicated.

Ethernet modem is the only solution to get rid of the above mentioned pains. Let’s compare what the program can bring:

1. Automatically network-enables modem communications applications without software changes.

2. No charges for phone calls.

3. Neither phone line nor modem required.

4. Speed is far higher then hardware modems have.

5. Location-independent. Virtual Modem can be used anywhere in the world where Internet access is available.

6. You can limit network access to your virtual modem using any firewall software.

Ethernet modems are successfully used in such spheres as financial systems, credit card transaction, legal information database access, real estate information systems, device control and data acquisition, building automation, security systems.

Warp Speed Internet

January 28th, 2009
modems
Whether you’re a Net newcomer or an Internet expert, sooner or later you’ll find yourself wishing that the Web worked a little more quickly. Wouldn’t it be great if downloads didn’t tie up your modem for a fortnight, Web panes appeared in less than an hour and streaming music didn’t disconnect every three seconds?

Of course, the easiest way to get a faster connection is to sign up for broadband. If you’ve got the cash - and you’re lucky enough to live in an area where broadband Internet access is available.

That doesn’t mean modem users are stuck with slow connections though. There are plenty of tweaks you can use to get the best connection speeds possible, and software companies offer all kinds of utilities that are designed to tweak Windows, speed up downloads and make your connection work that little bit harder.

Blame Windows

Before you hurl invective at your ISP, it’s important to check the basics first. Are you using the correct modem drivers? Dialing the correct phone number for your ISP and modem type? These simple mistakes are more common than you think, and just a quick check can make the difference between a speedy and a sluggish connection.

Make sure you’re using the right connection settings (check your ISPs help pages, then have a look in Control Panel - Modems. Although your modem connection speed is 56Kbps, you should ensure that Windows is set to a maximum of 115,200bps instead; this means you can take advantage of your modem’s built-in compression to squeeze every last bit of performance from your hardware.

If everything looks okay, there are a few more simple things to check. Are you trying to do too much? There’s only so much data that can be squeezed down a phone line, so If

you’re downloading eight files, reading six Web pages and trying to listen to streaming audio at the same time then it’s no surprise that things aren’t running as quickly as you’d like. If you’re accessing sites at peak times - typically, 5am-7pm then you’ll also notice a significant slow-down.

One way to increase the speed of your Web browser is to increase the size of your browser cache. This uses your hard disk to store a copy of each Web page you visit, together with all it’s graphics, animations and so on; If the page hasn’t changed when you return to the site, your browser loads the page from your hard disk instead of from the Internet. Because many sites use the same graphics for navigation, logos and so on, a good-sized browser cache can speed things up dramatically; If you don’t believe us, clear Internet Explorer’s Temporary Internet Files folder (Tools • Internet Options • General •• Delete Files) and access your favorite sites. Because their graphics are no longer cached on your hard disk, they’ll take much longer to load than normal.

It’s easy to change the size of your browser cache; in Internet Explorer, go to Tools • Internet options ••• General •• Temporary Internet Files • Settings and adjust the slider to the number you want. If you’re short of space, 100Mb should be okay; if you visit lots of sites every day, it’s a good idea to make the cache much bigger.

You can also try a tweaking program such as Tweak XP to change some arcane Windows configuration settings, but don’t expect miracles: tweaking can make a slight difference to your connection speed, but most connection problems are to do with sites, phone lines or ISPs rather than obscure parts of the Windows Registry.

Blame your Telephone Company

A slow connection isn’t necessarily the fault of your ISP - It could be your phone line. If there are miles of cheap extension cables between your modem and your phone point, getting any kind of connection is miraculous: signal quality degrades the further it has to travel, and lots of extension cabling could result in a poor quality phone signal. Try moving your computer nearer to the phone point and use a single bit of cable between your modem and the wall socket to see if things improve; you could also give your telephone company a call and ask them to turn up the gain on your phone line. This boosts the signal quality of your phone line and can make a big difference to your connection speeds.

Another possibility is that your telephone company has crippled your connection. If you’ve signed up for a second line, have a look in the cupboard to see if the engineer’s installed a DACS box. If he has, that’s almost certainly the culprit. A DACS box doesn’t actually give you a second line. Rather, it takes your existing phone line and splits it in two.

The result is usually a connection speed that never crawls above 33.6Kbps, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Your telephone company only guarantees that you’ll get a phone connection, not that you’ll get a decent phone connection. If you’re considering getting a second phone line, make sure you’re not fobbed off with a DACS box. If you’ve already got one of the evil things installed, there’s not much you can do short of upgrading to ISDN.

Computer Tips and Help: Buying a New Computer? Think “local”!

January 8th, 2009
modems
Technology has advanced so much during the past few years that any entry-level computer is going to have more than enough “horsepower” for the average computer user. So the days of being concerned about the size of the hard drive and speed of the processor have pretty much passed into history. RAM (memory) is still vitally important so I would not recommend any new system with less than 512MB. 1GB is even better; and if you’ve got your eyeballs set on the full, bells-and-whistles version of Windows Vista, 2GB will warm the cockles of Mr. Gates’ heart. One topic I always encourage when giving out computer tips and help to shoppers is to purchase locally, if at all possible. Virtually every community has one or more reputable computer shops that build computers. There are many advantages of purchasing locally as opposed to going through mail order or online through Dell, Gateway, HP, Compaq, etc. First and foremost, service is generally outstanding. A retailer that builds your computer will typically provide extraordinary service and support for all your computer problems, answers them in a timely manner, and realizes that their future business depends on their reputation within your local community.I usually purchase two new systems a year, each one built for me by a local computer builder/retailer. I’ve experienced first-hand through the years that if I have computer problems, answers are found quickly, with minimal or no “down” time, no 800-number calls to Banglagore, no bureaucracy, no messages that let me know how important my call is, only to advise me that my approximate waiting time is 37 minutes. In addition, many local computer builders will deliver and install your new system. Some will even copy data from your old computer to the new; and some will include an hour of training so they can show you how to use the CD-DVD burner or answer any questions you may have. But the primary benefit is cultivating a relationship with a local computer builder/repair service so that you’ll always have someone to turn to if a problem arises. If you purchase your new PC from a local retailer/builder, there’s also the benefit of keeping your hard-earned dollars right there within your community. You’ll be supporting the tax base while at the same time supporting your local merchants. How good is that?If you’re not sure who to go turn to for your new system, start making some inquiries; talk to friends, ask at local computer clubs for computer tips and help, and check the Yellow Pages and the business section of your newspaper. Keep asking and you’ll discover that there are always one or two names that continually come up.Another advantage of having a computer built for you is that you can get exactly the system you want. Or, if you’re not sure what you want, you can discuss with the builder how you use your computer and benefit from the builder’s suggestions and recommendations. When you purchase off-the-shelf or online from a national outfit, your brand-new system will generally arrive loaded with all kinds of software that you’ll probably never use. The first time you connect to the Internet, many of those programs will automatically register with their respective vendors which will open the door to pop-ups and nag screens galore, all inviting/harassing you to sign up for a variety of services, upgrades, etc., which creates unnecessary computer problems. Answers to any issues like this will always be to buy locally. I’ve never understood the philosophy behind loading up a new computer with gratuitous software. To me, that’s like buying a new car that the dealer then drives for a thousand miles under the pretense of testing it out for you. By the time you get it home, it’s a used car! Why accept a new computer with a hard drive that’s already infested with software that you’ll never use and probably never even know what it’s for? When I purchase new computers, the only thing I permit to be installed is Windowsthough these days I prefer dual-boot Windows/Linux systems. This gets rid of many computer problems, answers all my questions about what was installed on my computer, and allows me to pick and choose what I want installed. By only permitting the operating system to be installed, and whatever drivers or programs are necessary for any peripheral devices I might purchase, I know I’ve got a squeaky clean hard drive and anything that gets installed on that computer will be installed by me. Doing this also ensures that I’ll never look at my Programs or other folders and scratch my head wondering, “What’s that program?”Another one of my computer hints, tips and recommendations is if your computer builder normally installs a plethora of programs, review a list of programs beforehand and tell the builder which ones, if any, you want installed. It’s your computer; you should decide what’s installed or not. Once I setup my new computer, then I’ll install a few of my favorite ‘can’t-live-without-’em’ programs, and I’m good to go. You’ll find a list of Mr. Modem’s Favorite Programs in my Web-based Library.Last, but not least, when purchasing a new computer, tips and help I always give out is to obtain the original Windows installation CD. Some of the big-boy retailers won’t include the installation CD or will place a ‘restore utility’ on a drive partition, which serves no useful purpose if you experience a drive failure. Obtaining the original Windows installation CD is rarely a problem with local computer builders. In most cases, it’s automatically included, but it never hurts to mention it, just to be sure. If you ever need to reinstall Windows or if a file becomes corrupted, or if you need to reinstall a component, you’re pretty much out of luck unless you have the original Windows installation CD.Nationally syndicated columnist Mr. Modem delivers helpful, easy-to-understand computing tips and prompt, personal, plain-English answers to subscribers of his weekly newsletter. Want to Experience Seamless Wireless Connectivity? Just Plug in a 3G Modem

January 7th, 2009
modems
A leap of generation…a leap in cutting edge communication technology!

A 3rd Generation (3G) communication device is a rage among people across the globe. 3G communication devices enable simultaneous transfer of voice data (a telephone call) as well as non-voice data (such as instant messaging, information download and e-mail exchange). This means that you can use a 3G phone not only to chat with your near and dear ones but also to connect to Internet, check your e-mails and download important business information…while you are on move.

How to avail the 3G capabilities through your laptop or mobile while you are trotting round the globe?

Well, business persons/sales people need to stay in touch with their office headquarters and colleagues while they are on business tours. They not only need to talk to their customers, colleagues and superiors but also need to access their e-mails and surf the Internet.

3G modems are increasingly gaining popularity as a means to achieve wireless connectivity when one is travelling. A 3G modem/3G broadband data card may be inserted into a laptop’s PCMCIA card slot to utilise 3G capabilities.

3G modems provide global wireless access to the Internet and e-mails. A 3G broadband data card will enable you to connect wireless to your business information through 3G broadband network. And when you move out of the particular 3G broadband network (while travelling), the data card will seamlessly switch to the next best type of connection available (3G or GPRS) without interrupting the connection. That means you can stay connected ‘eternally’ with your office/near and dear ones all through your business tour!!

The 3G modems are backward compatible with the UMTS, EDGE and GPRS networks.

Apart from the travelling business people and sales guys, 3G modems are in demand among the:

desktop users who require permanent wireless Internet connection

users in rural areas where broadband Internet connection is not available

So, are you ready for a generation leap??
